about 5 days ago Have you checked out the new Cancer 52 Inequalities report? In October 2022, Cancer 52 released a report called 'Taking Action on Inequalities in Rare and Less Common Cancers: Understanding the Issues'. The report was produced by a working group of which SGC UK was proudly a member. about 9 days ago Have you seen this article about Loren Stokes? Loren Stokes is a British mother and dental nurse from Shrewsbury. She was diagnosed with adenoid cystic carcinoma in 2019, and as part of her treatment she had her larynx, thyroid, salivary glands and part of her oesophagus removed. Due to the surgery, she now uses a voice prosthesis. She has been uniquely chosen to launch the fundraising campaign called 'Stand Up To Cancer' by Channel 4 and Cancer Research UK. Loren Stokes is raising awareness about salivary gland cancer, along with encouraging others to be proud of their voice prosthesis. She notes that if she didn't have the procedure, she would not be here. #RareCancer #GenomicsEngland #LivingWithCancer #HeadAndNeckCancers #RareDiseaseAdvocate #RareDiseaseSurvivor #CancerFundraiser #CancerSupportServices #CharityFundraisers #SalivaryGlandCancerUK @SGCancerUK

about 19 days ago What does the parotid gland do? The image shows the parotid gland and its relationship with the mouth... The parotid gland produces a watery saliva that helps with digestion and mouth lubrication. The gland is located around the side of the jaw, in front of and around the ear as well as in the roof of the mouth. It produces a watery saliva that drains into the mouth around the upper cheeks keeping the mouth lubricated for speech and swallowing, as well as helping with food digestion. #RareCancer #GenomicsEngland #LivingWithCancer #HeadAndNeckCancers #RareDiseaseAdvocate #RareDiseaseSurvivor #CancerFundraiser #CancerSupportServices #CharityFundraisers #SalivaryGlandCancerUK @SGCancerUK

about 2 months ago What is the parotid gland? As seen in the image above, the parotid gland is the largest of the pairs of salivary glands. The location of the parotid gland is intrinsically linked to the facial nerves - as can be seen from the image. The facial nerves across the parotid gland controls movement and expression. This makes any surgery of the parotid very complex. The parotid gland produces a watery saliva that drains into the top of the mouth at the upper cheeks. The amount of saliva in the mouth produced by this gland goes from 10% up to 25% when eating. About 85% of salivary gland tumours occur in the parotid gland. They are very slow growing and the majority or parotid tumours are benign. If surgery is required it is called a parotidectomy.
